What is One and All About?
The One and All Foundation has been developed to ensure that every individual can fulfil their potential in an open, diverse and dynamic hospitality industry.
It’s a fact: Times are changing. Society is changing. The workforce has already changed.
Traditionally our industry has been one in which people are promoted on talent and skill. This should continue. However, to achieve an industry that is a true meritocracy, we also need to recognise that talent comes in many forms. That everyone is different.
We must now embrace these changes and ensure that every individual can fulfil their potential in our industry.
Some Key Facts
Demographics are changing – quickly:
- By 2011, only 20% of the workforce will be white, able bodied, male and under 45
- The population is aging, this year people of pension age outnumber under 16’s for the first time ever and in the past 10 years employment in the over 50’s age group has risen almost 25%
- Between 2001 and 2020, ethnic minority people are expected to account for over 70% of the growth in the UK population aged 16-59
- In London, the hotel and restaurant sector consists of 40.8% female and
44.1% BAME (black, Asian and minority ethnic) employees - Nearly one in five people of working age (6.9 million, or 19%) in Great Britain are disabled
Yet:
- Only 2% of Board Directors in our industry are from a black, Asian or minority Ethnic (BAME) background
- Only 6% of middle management positions in our industry are occupied by BAME employees
- Fewer than 6% of company directors are women and at the current rate of progress it will take another 73 years to have equal numbers of female directors of FTSE 100 companies and 200 years for equal numbers in Parliament
Why do people from these groups not progress through to management?
Are they not aware of the opportunities?
Is the organisational culture a barrier in some way?
Are they not good enough?
Are their talents not spotted?
Are they not willing to put their hands up for development or promotion?
The One and All Foundation is concerned that we are missing out on critical pools of talent that will move on to other sectors if we cannot identify and nurture them and help them to satisfy their own ambitions.
Everyone is different. We are all individuals
What can we do together to ensure we benefit from all the talent available? We need to look for simple ways to locate people with promise - even if that talent is not jumping up and shouting Me! Me! Me!
Above all, it’s about recognising talent, nurturing and developing it.
